| This programme has been developed by the School of Medicine to widen access into the medical profession and has achieved national recognition as an example of good practice. It involves studying for an extra year on a specially designed Year 0 course before joining the students on the BM5 programme (the standard medical degree at Southampton). |

1) First generation applicant to Higher Education - If you are a first generation applicant this means that your parents did not go to university straight 2) Parents, guardian or self in receipt of a means tested benefit - This means that either you or your parents or guardian (if you still live with them) receive a 3) Living in supported accommodation, or independently of financial support apart from state provision - This means that you are a ‘looked after’ young person, living in a foyer or youth hostel or living independently on benefits or by working and studying. 4) Eligible to receive EMA (Education Maintenance Award) or similar grant - This means that at the time of applying to university, whilst you are studying, you are receiving either an Educational Maintenance Award or something similar, such as the Adult Learning Grant or other financial support from your school or college. 5) Residential in an area with a postcode which falls within the lowest 20% of the |
