About this course:
 
This programme has been developed by the School of Medicine to widen access into the medical profession and has achieved national recognition as an example of good practice. It involves studying for an extra year on a specially designed Year 0 course before joining the students on the BM5 programme (the standard medical degree at Southampton).

Entrance requirements:
   
A levels: CCC: A Level chemistry and biology/human biology at grade C or above, plus other subjects at A and/or AS level comparable to one grade C at A Level (or equivalent qualification)

OR

AS Level chemistry and biology/human biology at grade B or above, plus other subjects at A and/or AS level comparable to two grade Cs at A Level (or equivalent qualification),

GCSEs: Five GCSEs at Grade C or above, to include English, Mathematics and Double Science.
Resit policy: All qualifications must be taken at one sitting. Applicants who have retaken one A level will be considered as if they had achieved the appropriate grade at the first sitting. Applicants retaking more than one A level will be considered provided there were exceptional circumstances related to the first sitting.

Non-academic criteria:
   
Socioeconomic criteria: All applicants must meet 2 of the following criteria:

1) First generation applicant to Higher Education - If you are a first generation applicant this means that your parents did not go to university straight
from school or college either in the UK or overseas. If they went to university as a mature student you should indicate on the Screening Criteria form what qualification they achieved and their age upon completion. It does not matter if your siblings are at or have been to university.

2) Parents, guardian or self in receipt of a means tested benefit - This means that either you or your parents or guardian (if you still live with them) receive a
means tested benefit such as:
Income Support
Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
Housing Benefit
Council Tax Benefit
Child Tax Credit
Working Tax Credit
Social Fund (in some cases)

3) Living in supported accommodation, or independently of financial support apart from state provision - This means that you are a ‘looked after’ young person, living in a foyer or youth hostel or living independently on benefits or by working and studying.

4) Eligible to receive EMA (Education Maintenance Award) or similar grant - This means that at the time of applying to university, whilst you are studying, you are receiving either an Educational Maintenance Award or something similar, such as the Adult Learning Grant or other financial support from your school or college.

5) Residential in an area with a postcode which falls within the lowest 20% of the
IMD (Index of Multiple Deprivation) or a member of a travelling family.
