About:

Newcastle University Medical School was established in 1834 in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. It operates in partnership with Durham University’s medical school, which is based at the university’s Queen’s Campus.

Overview:

The curriculum at Newcastle is aligned to the General Medical Council (GMC) standards for the knowledge, skills and behaviours of undergraduate medical students and for the delivery of teaching, learning and assessment, as outlined in Outcomes for Graduates and Promoting excellence: standards for medical education and training.

  • Years 1 and 2 use integrated case-led teaching to help you build a solid foundation for clinically based learning.
  • Years 3, 4 and 5 include significant clinical experience and places further emphasis on professional development, student choice, and hospital- and community-based medicine.

UCAS admissions procedure

You may apply for Year 1 entry to Newcastle University

  • You are permitted a maximum of four choices on the UCAS application form for medicine
  • The closing date for applications is 15 October
UKCAT

All applicants applying to study the 5 year A100 programme or the 4 year A101 Medicine programme at Newcastle University will be required to take the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT).

Health Assessment and Disclosure

All students are required to comply with the Department of Health’s guidance on health clearance for healthcare workers. Early clinical contact at Newcastle means that students will be asked to provide proof of their immunisation status on entry.

  • AAA including Chemistry and/or Biology at A or AS level and excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking.
  • For Biology, Chemistry and Physics A levels, a pass is required in the practical element.
  • If only one of Biology and/or Chemistry is offered at A or AS level, the other should be offered at GCSE grade A or 7 (or Dual Award Science grade A or 7).

Once the academic criteria have been met additional A levels or A* results or additional GCSE results are not considered.

Newcastle normally expect all applicants to have achieved their A levels on their first attempt. Those who wish resits to be considered must provide information on the extenuating circumstances they wish to be considered.

AAAAA at Higher Grade including Chemistry and/or Biology. If only one of Chemistry or Biology is offered at Higher level then the other should be offered at National 5, minimum grade A (or grade 1 Standard grade or Intermediate 2 equivalent).

Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

A minimum of 38 points including grade 5 in all subjects with Higher Level grade 6 in Chemistry or Biology. Combinations including two Sciences, Mathematics and English are desirable.

Other

Irish Leaving Certificate

H1H1H1H2H2H2 at Higher Level, including Chemistry and Biology. Physics and English Language required at Ordinary Level, if not offered at Higher Level.

Access Qualifications

For applicants offering an Access to Higher Education Diploma (Medicine), Distinctions to be achieved in the graded credit modules. The further 15 ungraded credits can be a combination of level 2 and 3. Please contact us for further details about the courses accepted.

Cambridge Pre-U

D3,D3,D3 in Principal Subjects. Subjects should include Chemistry and/or Biology. If only one of Biology and/or Chemistry is offered, the other should be offered at GCSE grade A or 7 (or Dual Award Science grade A or 7).

PARTNERS - A Levels

ABB at A level. Subjects should include Chemistry and/or Biology at A or AS level. We do not accept General Studies or Critical Thinking as an A level entry qualification. For Biology, Chemistry and Physics A levels, we require a pass in the practical element. If only one of Biology and/or Chemistry is offered at A or AS level, the other should be offered at GCSE grade B or 6 (or Dual Award Science grade B or 6).

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English require a minimum score of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent including 7.0 in each of the four elements of the test.

 

Candidate Selection

  • Around 850 prospective students will be invited for interview
  • 318 will be offered a place (there are currently 219 places at Newcastle University and 99 places at Durham University)
  • The UKCAT threshold may differ in each admissions cycle as it is dependent on the scores achieved by those applicants who apply to our Medical School in the current cycle.
  • Admissions tutors take into account:
    • exam results
    • personal statement
    • school or college reference
    • evidence of relevant skills or aptitude
    • any special circumstances which affect your application
  • Applications which meet the academic threshold will be assessed on their UKCAT scores, and if your UKCAT score meets the threshold then you will be invited for interview.

The Interview Process

  • Interviews will be held between mid-November and early-March.
  • As a reference, in 2015 cycle the A100 Interview threshold UKCAT was 2,300.
  • Will assess and grade in 6 main categories:

    • Team working
    • Personal qualities / resilience
    • Interpersonal and communication skills
    • Empathy, sensitivity and integrity
  • The purpose of the interview is to confirm whether you have the potential aptitude, motivation and personal qualities to succeed as a medical student.
