Hi,

I'm thinking of doing medicine and was wondering what kind of work experience people have done? I was thinking of doing some volunteering in a nursing home but is this 'medical' enough? do i need to go and shadow a doctor or see some surgery or something?

I've worked in a nursing home and done a few other bits and bobs. It's really hard to know what they really want but i think the important thing is just to tell them what you got out of it. I know i can cope with caring for people who probably aren't going to get any better etc. I think that kind of thing is just as important as following doctors around. Not that that isn't good too.

my mum is a nurse and she helped me get some volunteering work at the my local hospital - i basically go into the children's ward once a week and talk to the parents and their children etc. it's really good but it took ages for all the security checks to come through.

i think the med schools are just looking to see whether you are really serious about your decision to do medicine and that you've learnt something from volunteering/work exp - so nursing home sounds good!

It's so hard to get in to hospitals though. Its fine if your mum's a nurse but I've written to loads of GPs and they all said no or didn't reply. Any ideas about how to get through to them?
