As mature applicants whom is best to use for a referee on UCAS form? I'm not sure I want to use my most recent employer and was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions for people to use, can it just be someone you've known for years?
Thanks in advance for any advice

hi again :)

It's really important that you check with the universities that you choose regarding who they would like to write your reference. Some universities insist on an academic referee - i.e. old personal tutor / research supervisor etc.

This can be a pain for people who left education a long time ago but if it's what they ask for then you should try to provide an academic reference. Some places are happy with an employer, which is often better for older applicants.

I would expect that you could use someone you've known for years if it is a health care professional. If not then I would definitely avoid this. They *normally* want someone you have worked for or have studied under.

If you don't like the sound of either then I suggest you send in a supplimentary reference. Call up the universities you are interested in and ask them what type of reference they are looking for. Use this type as your normal UCAS reference and send in references from other people on top if you aren't happy with your official one. The worst that can happen is that they throw the additional reference away, in which case you lose nothing.

Good luck!
