I have just finished my GCSE's and am interested in applying to med school. I would like to do some work experience. Could anybody tell me what the legal requirements etc are? Am I able to go to GP surgeries and sit in consultations if I am 16 yrs old? Thanks

Hi Chris,
From what I've heard, I think its quite hard especially for someone of your age to find work experience. Neverthless, i would still try and go for it, but remember that some GPs are willing to have ppl on for WE, while others aren't - it depends.
But at your age, i think it would also be good to start doing some voluntary work, getting involved in the community, etc.
Im sure others will have more to say.

Hi chris,
As far as I am aware, there are no laws against 16 year olds sitting in on consultations. I suggest you write to GPs in your area, enclosing a CV (with things like previous work experience / school experiences / predicted grades etc) and see what happens.
You might find it harder to get work experience before you are 18 but it is definitely possible. Most medical schools look for evidence that you have worked with people in a caring role, more so than just sitting in with GPs (although this is good experience too). So if you can't get in to a surgery then try to get other types of work experience - e.g. working in an old people's home / st. john's ambulance etc.
Check out http://www.do-it.org.uk/ for some ideas.
Good luck!
