Should the UK adopt a system presumed consent for organ donation?

Do you think that the UK should adopt a so-called 'opt out' system for organ donation?

Under such a system, it would be assumed that any individual would be happy to donate organs in the event of their death unless they have specifically stated that they do not wish to do so.

Countries such as Austria, Belgium and Span already operate various types of 'opt out' systems.

Do you think that the UK should do the same?

I'm unsure about an opt out system, but a system where the wishes of the patient are respected and registration onto the organ donor register means that your decision cannot be superseded by a releative on death definately has merit. Why the organ donor register cant be seen as a definitive decision is beyond me.

Great site by the way :)

i agree, the system needs streamlining in a way that lets us get at valuable organs.

The beleifs that stop organ donation - what are they?Religious beliefs? traditional views? these surely need adjusting if we are to live for a community in the 21st century.

Its not just beliefs that stop people from donating though is it? I think the 'ick factor' plays a part, plus the uncertainty surrounding use of organs- scandals like Alder Hey etc haven't helped either.

The most important thing in my opinion is that when someone dies their exact wishes are followed- this makes an opt out system far too dangerous. Its like saying that consent for medical procedures is always assumed unless someone opts out. Imagine the chaos that would cause.
